Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the casting slab free from slag inclusion to be obtained by continuously measuring the position of cast steel surface by microwaves, etc. and giving an alarm when the molten steel surface has lowered to the specified position thereby stopping the effluence of molten steel at the time of pouring molten steel to a mold or the like from the ladle.
CONSTITUTION: The distance down to the bottom of a ladle 1 is beforehand measured by a distance measuring means 2 such as microwaves, laser light or ultrasonic waves, after which molten steel is received and is let to flow into a tundish 6. At the same time, the distance up to the surface of molten slag 4 is continuously measured to detect the residual steel amount in the ladle 1. The abovementioned detection is obtained from the fixed rate of the slag amount in the molten steel or by an iron bar immersion method commonly practised. The results of the abovementioned measurement are sent to a distance comparator 7, which operates a switch 8 to close a rotary nozzle 5 to stop the effluence of the molten steel 3 and give an alarm when the molten steel amount in the ladle 1 becomes the amount corresponding to the molten steel height at which slag inclusion occurs.
