Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce highly adsorbent, inexpensive, powdered active carbon by a method wherein coal provided by solely burning pulp waste liquid is treated by dipping in aqueous inorganic solution, washed with water, and dried.
CONSTITUTION: Semi-chemical pulp waste liquid is concentrated to about 50% solid content and subjected to reductive calcination at about 720°C. Formed gas and solid are separated, and a main component of the gas, or SO2 is reacted with a main component of the solid, or Na2CO3 to provide Na2SO3 which is recovered, the residual carbon being coal provided by sole burning of pulp waste liquid. This residual carbon is dipped in aqueous inorganic solution at room temperature to 100°C to remove ash, washed with water, and dried.
