Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A benzoic acid ester of formula I (R1 is 1W10C alkyl; R2 is 2W 7C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 3-n-Pentyloxy-6-hydroxyphthalonitrile 4-(4'-trans-alkylcyclohexyl)benzoic acid ester.
USE: Liquid crystal. Low melting point and large negative dielectric anisotropy. Chemically stable and colorless which enable arbitrary combinations with other liquid crystal substance.
PROCESS: The compound I is prepared e.g. by reacting a compound II with the acid chloride of the compound III in a basic solvent such as pyridine. The compound II is obtained by the alkylation of 2,3-dicyano-p-hydroquinone in the presence of an alkali.
