Abstract
PURPOSE: On melt spinning a monofunctional epoxy compound and a specific carboxylate salt are added to a polyester polymer, whereby the amount of the epoxide added can be reduced and polyester fiber with lowered carboxyl terminals are obtained without the reduction of polymerization degree.
CONSTITUTION: When a polyester consisting of at least 70% of polyethylene terephthalate as the molecular building block is melt spun, 0.05W5wt%, preferably 0.1W2wt% of a monofunctional epoxide compound (phenyl glycidyl ether is most preferred) and 0.001W0.5wt%, preferably 0.005W0.1wt% of a carboxylate salt of a metal selected from the group consisting alkali and alkaline earth metals and metals with atomic numbers from 22W30 are added. The salt of Li, Ca, Mg, Mn, Co or Mn is preferred as the carboxylate.
USE: The resulting fiber has increased resistance to hydrolysis and heat and is used for tire cord, fish net and canvas for paper making.
