Abstract

PURPOSE: To readily produce vermicular graphitic cast iron of superior mass effect and improved castability by adding the Si-Ca-base additive containing Mg, rare earth elements such as Ce to molten cast iron.
CONSTITUTION: The additive containing Ca; 10W30%, Mg; 0.5W10%, rare earth elements such as Ce<3%, one or more kinds among Zr, Sb, Ti, Al 1W15% respectively and 20% or less in total and the rest composed of Si. With Ca-Si of grain sizes 3W7mm as aggregate, chlorides or fluorides of Mg or rare earth elements are coated on the surface thereof. The other components are coated on the aggregate surface in the form of compounds, Si alloy or Fe alloy to make the additive to the sizes of 1W 20mm in diameter. After this is added at a rate of 0.3W1.5% to molten cast iron, it is inoculated by Fe-Si. This yields the vermicular graphitic cast iron of superior castability and mechanical properties.
