Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high-purity pyromellitic anhydride with ease useful as a raw material of a high-performance heat-resistant resin without requiring complex operations by heating an aromatic polyfunctional carboxylic acid or its acid ester in a hot flow of an inert gas.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic polyfunctional carbixylic acid shown by the formula (R is H or 1W4C alkyl; n is 5 or 6; with the proviso that 5W6 R may be different) or its acid ester is heated in a hot flow of an inert gas, e.g., nitrogen, helium or argaon gas at 200W600°C to give high-purity pyromellitic anhydride. Sulfuric acid, a solvent which will be handled with very difficulty in the after-treatment is not used so that complex operations are not required.
