Abstract

PURPOSE: Utilizing microorganisms belonging to Corynebacterium or others are produced corresponding 1,2-epoxides, which are used for starting materials of surface active agents, paints, synthetic resins, from straight-chain hydrocarbon bearing carbon-carbon double bonds on the terminal.
CONSTITUTION: A bacterium that belongs to Corynebacterium, or Brevibacterium, or Nocardia butanica or Nocardia paraffinica and assimilates hydrocarbons bearing double bonds to produce epoxides, e.g., Corynebacterium alkanum ATCC 21194 (FERM-4598) is cultured, e.g., aerobically in a medium containing a straight- chain hydrocarbon with a double bond on the terminal as n-dodecene-1, or n- tridecene-1, or cells resulting from the culture of the bacterium in a medium containing a carbon source that can be assimilated by the bacterium is made to react with the above hydrocarbon, thus producing 1,2-epoxides.
