Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an electrical contact material with little consumption, superior fusion bonding resistance and low contact resistance by adding an intermetallic compound of Bi and Mn to a molten Ag-Sn alloy to melt the compound followed by solidification, working and internal oxidation.
CONSTITUTION: Mn and Bi are melted in an Ar gas atmosphere to refine an Mn- Bi intermetallic compound, which is then solidified and coarsely crushed. Ag is melted in a graphite crucible, and Sn and the crushed compound is successively added to the molten Ag, melted, and cast in a metal mold. This ingot is hot-pressure-bonded to an Ag plate, rolled to a plate material, and maintained at 750°C for 40hr in an oxygen atmosphere with heating to internally oxidize the Sn, Mn and Bi. Thus, an electrical contact material contg. 4W10% SnO2 as Sn and 0.1W2% Mn-Bi oxide as Mn-Bi is manufactured. 0.05W1.0% NiO as Ni may be contained. The precipitated oxides are finely dispersed to provide superior characteristics to the material.
