Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and recover carbon such as graphite, iron, non-magnetic silica, lime from the waste discharge from an iron mill, by subjecting the finely crushed waste to floatation, then to magnetic separation in two steps.
CONSTITUTION: Waste mixture of soot, residue, sludge discharge from a shaft furnace, an LD converter, a desulfurizing unit for molten cast iron etc. in an iron mill is finely pulverized. The mixture is treated by floatation together with a collecting agent, a foaming agnet, to float the graphite contained in the mixture. The precipitated slurry is magnetically separated by a wet high gradient magnetic separator to recover magnetically deposited material contg. principaly iron, which is concentrated and dehydrated and is utilized as an iron source. To the mixture of undeposited material with water is added an anionic high molecular flocculant and stirred to be mixed, further added a cationic high molecular flocculant in an amount 0.5W1.5 times that of the anionic flocculant and is stirred to be mixed. The mixture is treated by a wet high gradient magnetic separator to separate silica and lime as deposited material, and the water is recovered as clean water.
