NEW MATERIAL:The titled compound of formula I (X is halogen, etc.; n is an integer 0W4; R1,2 are H or lower alkyl, or R1 and R2 may together form a ring).
EXAMPLE: N-(α,α-Dimethylbenzyl)-m-chlorophenylacetamide.
USE: Herbicide for paddy rice field, various crops, vegetables, orchard, etc. Excellent herbicidal activity. Especially effective to annual and perennial weeds in paddy rice field, and absolutely harmless to rice plant. It has broad herbicidal spectrum and effective even to Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus esculentus.
PROCESS: The compound I is prepared by reacting a phenylacetic acid derivative of formula II or its reactive derivative with α,α-dimethylbenzylamine in a solvent.
