Abstract

PURPOSE: To control pressure in a gas balance chamber so as to minimize axial thrust always in operation by opening and closing a controlling valve provided in the gas balance piping on the basis of data from a detector for detecting the causes of producing the axial thrust.
CONSTITUTION: When change in flow increases generally thrust acting to a shaft 2 in the direction opposite to arrow A, a controlling valve 15 is closed in response to the instruction of pressure signal by pressure signal from a flow measuring means 16 provided in a in-take pipe 5 so that pressure in the gas balance chamber 13 is raised by the increase of the resistance of the gas balance piping 12 to eliminate the thrust acting to the shaft 2 through a balance drum 11. Hence the thrust acting to the shaft 2 can be lessened always even if the flow changed, and damage can be prevented without enlarging a thrust bearing 10.
