Abstract

PURPOSE: To thermally decompose nitrogen monoxide effectively, by using a specific double oxide of strontium and iron as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A double oxide of strontium and iron, represented by the composition formula Sr2Fe2O5, is filled in a reaction tower to form a catalyst layer, and then nitrogen monoxide is passed through the catalyst layer at a reaction temperature of 700W900°C for thermal decomposition. Said catalyst Sr2Fe2O5 is prepared by a procedure in which a strontium salt, e.g., SrCO3, and an iron oxide, e.g., Fe2O3, are baked together at approx. 1,100W1,300°C in the air, formed into granular shape, further heat-treated at 1,100W1,300°C in the air to form an anion-locking type perovskite-phase composition, represented by the composition formula SrFeO2.87, and then reacted with nitrogen monoxide.
