Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare titled copolymer, soluble or dispersible in water, excellent in pigment-dispersion stability and suitable as a paint, by the bulk polymerization of five specified monomers.
CONSTITUTION: A polymerization initiator and a polymerization modifier are added to a mixture of (A) 0.1W99mol% monomer of formula I (R1 is H or CH3), (B) 0.1W99mol% monomer of formula II (n is 2W20), (C) 0.1W99mol% monomer of formula III (X1 is H or COOH; X2 is H, CH3, etc.; X3 is COOH, etc.), (D) 0.1W 0.99mol% monomer of formula IV [Y is formula V (R3 is R1 or C2H5: R4 is CH3, C2H5 or tertiary-butyl), -CH2-NH2, etc.] and (E) ≤40mol% monomer of formula VI [Z is formula VII (R5 is alkyl, etc.)]. The resulted mixture is charged into a flexible tube, ≤50mm in thickness and ≤1,000mm in width, and is bulk polymerized at 50W100°C, to obtain a copolymer, whose 20wt% solution or dispersion in water has ≤150 poise in viscosity at 20°C.
