Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate a setting of variable pitch steering by a method wherein a pinion is engaged with an inner threaded part of a cylindrical gear, a rack is engaged with an outer threaded part of the cylindrical gear, the tooth of the outer threaded part is formed in such a way as its various dimensions may continuously be varied and the teeth of the rack are correspondingly formed with the outer teeth.
CONSTITUTION: Outer tooth 4 of the cylindrical gear 2 is formed such that its radius of a reference pitch circle shows the maximum value at an engagement point A in a neutral position of the rack 8, a radius of the pitch circle is gradually decreased in a range of B-A-B' of an angle α at both sides of the point A, and the radius of reference pitch circle in a range of B-C-B' at 360° -2α is made under a specified ratio. The rack 8 is varied in response to a variation of the outer tooth 4. Under such an arrangement as described above, a steering of the handle is tight at the neutral position of the rack and gradually decreased as the handle is rotated in a rightward or a leftward direction, finally kept constant at the range B-C-B'. Therefore, it is possible to set any number of rotations of the handle by selecting a gear ratio between the pinion 1 and the inner tooth 3.
