Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a linseed mucilage, of low stringiness at high viscosity, presenting high viscosity and elasticity upon heat-cool treatment, by the separation of seed-surface mucilage, swelled with water, from linseed, followed by fractional extraction.
CONSTITUTION: After mucilage contained in the epidermis is swelled with addition of water of about 1.2W5 times the weight of linseed, the mucilage is separated from the seed by the action of physical energy (vibration, impact, shear, etc.) on the seed, and then fractional extraction is repeated in order to elute the mucilage, by the addition of water and agitation. Then the extract is dried, to obtain a fractionated mucilage, i.e. a linseed mucilage, rich in the mucilage present in the epidermis of linseed, which has viscosity of 100W1,000cp (1% aqueous solution, at 25°C, 30rpm, by B-type viscosimeter), and becomes a semi-jelly material of viscosity 500W20,000cp, when it is heated to 50°C and cooled.
