Abstract

PURPOSE: To isomerize selectively a β-α unsaturated alcohol comprising cis-type and trans-type isomers, only by heating the alcohol in the presence of a catalyst comprising a specific mercaptan which is available easily at a low cost.
CONSTITUTION: A mercaptan such as an aromatic mercaptan, e.g. bengenethiol, o-, m- and p-toluenethiol, etc., an alkyldithiol, e.g. decyldithiol, octyldithiol, etc., thioglycolic acid, mercaptoethanol, etc., is used as a catalyst for the thermal isomerization of a β-α unsaturated alcohol comprising cis-type and trans-type isomers and expressed by the formula [R1 is H or alkyl; R2 is hydrocarbon (which may have one or more atoms selected from O, S, N, etc.)]. Preferably the amount of the mercaptan is 0.5W20wt% on the basis of the raw material and the isomerization reaction temperature is 40W150°C.
EFFECT: The catalyst can be easily separated and reused.
