Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare high quality melamine, in high conversion, without interruption of the operation, using a catalyst having high activity, by pretreating urea and/or its thermal cracking product with activated charcoal at a specific temperature, and charging a reactor with the pretreated urea, thereby eliminating the need of catalyst regeneration.
CONSTITUTION: Urea or its heat-decomposition product is molten, and treated with powdery and/or granular activated charcoal at 130-180°C, pref. 132-145°C for 1-60 min., pref. 5-30 min. The pretreated urea is used as a raw material of melamine-synthesis using a solid acid catalyst such as γ-alumina. The synthesis of melamine is carried out in the presence of γ-alumina catalyst fluidized with a mixed gas comprising 50 wt% of NH3 and 50wt% of CO2, at 380-400°C, between atmospheric pressure and 2 kg/cm2G.
