Next, different signals are recorded from OSC on a tape while leaving the attenuation quantity of VA as it is, and at a reproducing time, the compensation quantity of high-band signal components dependent upon variable high-band compensating circuit VHC of the recording system is automatically so set that a reproducing signal level approximately equal to the recording level at a specific point can be obtained. As a result, recording and reproducing operations dependent upon a practically flat frequency characteristic can be performed independently of used tapes.
