Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a guest-host effect liquid crystal display element having low birefringence, excellent orientation and high contrast, by combining a cyclohexane- based nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy with a polychromatic azo dye.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display element composed of (A) a cyclohexane- based liquid crystal compound of formula I (R is alkyl, alkoxy; X is CN, Cl, Br, p-cyanophenyl, p-chloropheyl, p-bromophenyl) having positive dielectric anisotropy, e.g. 4-(4-cyanophenyl)-n-propylcyclohexane, and (B) a polychromatic dye such as a bisazo dye of formula II (A is H, NO2, n-butylsulfonyl, 1W2C alkanoyl; B is H, dimethylamino, diethylamino).
