Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the number of parts of a piston cooling device, facilitate the manufacture of the device and raise its reliability, by providing an outer pipe in the cylinder block of an engine and inserting a telescopic tube into the outer pipe.
CONSTITUTION: A piston 1 is cooled by oil 2. Double tubular passages 4, 5 are provided in the central part of a piston rod 3. The cooling oil 2 flows into the piston 1 through a passage 4. The oil 2 having cooled the piston is drained through a passage 5 and a drain pipe 6. The passage 4 is provided in an arm 8 attached to a crosshead pin 7, which moves up and down together with the piston rod 3. The passage of the arm 8 is connected to the telescopic tube 9 fixed on the arm 8. A cast hole or the like is provided in the cylinder block 13 to make the outer pipe 10. The upper part of the outer pipe is opened on the side of the cylinder block 13. A cooling oil passage 12 is connected to the opened part of the outer pipe. A packing 11 is fitted in the bottom of the outer pipe. An air reservoir 14 is attached to the side of the cylinder block 13 and does not contain the outer pipe 10. The size of a crankcase 15 is reduced as much as possible so that the telescopic tube 9 can move.
