Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the sealability of a mechanical seal by providing a balance portion at a stationary sealing ring provided at a stationary member to balance the rotary moment due to high pressure sealing fluid pressure so as to prevent strain at the sealing surface.
CONSTITUTION: A stationary sealing ring 4 is engaged via an O-ring 5 with a stationary member 1. A rotary sealing ring 3 is urged by a spring 6 to seal the fluid 7 at the sliding sealing surface 8. A balance portion 10 having a center O of the rotary moment to balance with the rotary moment due to the pressure of the sealing fluid 7 is provided at the ring 4. A spherical surface is formed at the contacting sectional surface 4a between the ring 4 and the sealing fluid 7 to allow the normal lines at the respective points to pass through the center O of the rotary moment. Thus, the operation of the ring 4 by the high pressure sealing fluid 7 is balanced at the respective points to prevent the strain at the sliding sealing surface 8 so as to improve the sealability of the mechanical seal.
