Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare high purity adipic acid useful for the synthesis of plasticizers, nylons, etc., economically, by washing crude adipic acid obtained from acidic waste water produced by the liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexane, with said waste water, and purifying the adipic acid by nitric acid oxidation, etc.
CONSTITUTION: An acidic waste water (containing 5W20% of adipic acid) produced from the process for the production of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol by the liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane, is concentrated, cooled and crystallized to obtain crude adipic acid, which is washed with said waste water at 0W70°C to remove the impurities such as condensates having high condensation degree. High purity adipic acid is obtained from the crude acid by oxidizing with nitric acid, washing with water, treating with activated charcoal and recrystallizing. The washing is pref. carried out using a multi-stage washing column to enable the reuse of the washing liquid. The used washing liquid is recycled to the crude adipic acid recovering step.
