Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify the recovered lactam, which has not been easily purified, readily, by treating the lactam recovered through depolymerization of polycaprolactam containing organic sulfur compounds under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: The recovered caprolactam which is obtained by depolymerization of polycaprolactam containing organic sulfur compounds, e.g. 2-mercaptobenzimidazole as a heat stabilizer, is burified by adding an nonvolatile acid, e.g. phosphoric acid to acidify the melt or aqueous solution of the lactam, by evoporating the sulfur impurities at 40°C or above at normal or reduced pressure, and by distilling the melt or solution basified with an alkali. The organic sulfur compounds formed by combination of CS2 and H2S with amines in the recovered lactam can be completely eliminated.
