Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers usable for structural materials having a high strength, by flameproofing acrylic polymer fiber yarns drawn under specific conditions with a shrinkage in a specified range.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylic polymer solution is spun into a coagulation bath, rinsed with water, and dried to form an acrylic polymer fiber yarn, which is drawn in saturated steam at 105W150°C at a drawratio in the range of 75W85% of the maximum for 0.1W10 sec. The drawn yarn is then flameproofed in an oxidizing atmosphere at 200W350°C with a shrinkage of 8W18% for 10minW3hr, and carbonized in an inert gas atmosphere at 800°C or above under a tension of preferably 1W40mg/d to form the objective carbon fibers.
