NEW MATERIAL:A diene-type fluorine-containing compound of the formula [X is H or Cl; G is 1-2C hydrocarbon group; x is 0 or 1, Z is hydroxy, alkoxy, or OM(M is alkali metal)]. EXAMPLE:Methyl ester of 2,3,4,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentadienoic acid. USE:Functional high polymers, e.g. ion exchange membranes, surfactants, textile finishes, emulsifiers, metal cleaners, solvents, and surface treatments. PROCESS:A fluorine-containing alcohol of the formula H(C2HF2Cl)2-Y-OH (Y is 1-3C hydrocarbon group) or H(C2F2Cl2)2-Y-OH (Y is the same as described above) is obtained from a fluorine-containing olefin and a 1-3C saturated alcohol, oxidized with an oxidizing agent, and dehydrochlorinated and/or dechlorinated.
