Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain piperonal from piperonyl alcohol with high conversion and selectivity, by using an aqueous solvent and ferric nitrate as an oxidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of piperonyl alcohol is oxidized with 0.5W3 moles, preferably 1W1.5 moles, of ferric nitrate in water or an aqueous solvent comprising water and 20W70 vol.% of an organic water-miscible solvent, such as dioxane, ethyl acetate, or acetone, as an aqueous medium at 20W120°C, preferably 80W100°C, for 20W180 min.
