Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare high calorie gas rich in methane while controlling the reaction temperature to a lower level and suppressing the deposition of carbon on the catalyst, by contacting raw gas containing hydrogen and oxides of carbon diluted with steam, with a catalyst comprising nickel, rare earth metals and aluminum. CONSTITUTION:Raw gas containing hydrogen and oxdies of carbon, e.g. gas prepared by partial oxidation of heavy oil or coal, etc., is contacted with a methanation catalyst comprising Ni and/or Co, one or more rare earth metals (pref. La or Ce) and Al to give methane-rich gas at 250-500 deg.C at 1-100 atm while controlling the heat of the reaction by diluting the raw gas with steam. The catelyst pref. is composed of 10-95wt.% of NiO, 2-50wt.% of La2O3 and 3-88wt.% of Al2O3. EFFECT:The life of the catalyst is increased and the reactor size can be reduced. Special materials are not necessary for the reactor.
