Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a hydrocarbon resin of good color, having high heat stability, and suitable as adhesiveness-imparting resin, by polymerization between an unsaturated carboxylic acid and a specific unsaturated hydrocarbon-contg. fraction obtained by thermal cracking of petroleum.
CONSTITUTION: An unsaturated hydrocarbon-contg. fraction is first obtained by adjusting the content of a cyclopentadiene such as fulvene, to pref. 0.05W0.5wt%, in the 140W280°C fraction obtained by thermal cracking like vapor phase cracking of petroleum. An α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid, etc., is subsequently brought into contact at 20W60°C, with the fraction obtained above in an amount of pref. 1W2mol per mole of said cyclopentadiene, followed by carrying out polymerization in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as trifluoroboron, etc., thus obtaining the objective hydrocarbon resin.
