Abstract

PURPOSE:To constantly maintain a low initial value of electric resistance for an extended period of time using a separator of a hydrophilic porous structure having an insolubilized water-soluble high molecular compound in the pore spaces of a porous fluororesin piece. CONSTITUTION:A hydrophilic porous structure having an insolubilized water- soluble high molecular compound in the pore spaces of a porous fluororesin piece is used as a separator 4 between a cathode 1 and an anode 5. The fluororesin piece is a piece having pores penetrating through the top and bottom faces thereof vinyl fluoride resin, vinylidene fluoride resin, trifluorochloroethylene resin, tetrafluoroethylene resin or their copolymer. A water solution of a watersoluble high molecular compound, such as polyvinylalcohol, polyethyleneoxide or polyethylene glycol, is impregnated in the pores, than insolubilized by heat treatment or acetalizing treatment.
