Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title oxyhydroxide superior to that of a conventional method in properties by simultaneously blowing an aq. soln. of alkali and an O2- contg. gas into an aq. soln. of ferrous sulfate and by reacting them under predetermined conditions.
CONSTITUTION: In production of γ-FeOH suitable for use as raw material for magnetic iron oxide powder for a magnetic recording medium, ferrous sulfate is dissolved in water in an arbitrary concn., and an aq. soln. of alkali such as NH3 and an O2-contg. gas such as O2 or air are simultaneously blown into the soln. and reacted at pH 5.5W7 and 5W15°C for 1.5W3.5 hr to deposit precipitates. When the reaction pH is outside the above range, and the reaction temp. above 15°C, undesirable α-iron oxyhydroxide is formed. The precipitates are then filtered to obtain γ- iron oxyhydroxide. A magnetic tape manufactured using this oxyhydroxide has a larger square shape, improved dispersibility and superior other electromagnetic conversion characteristics compared to a magnetic tape obtd. by a conventional method using iron chloride as raw material.
