Abstract
PURPOSE: The nitration of toluene is effected in an inert organic solvent at a relatively small amount of mixed acid, thus depressing the formation of the ortho isomer, a by-product, and producing title compound mixture of higher meta isomer content than the conventional product; the meta isomer is useful as intermedidate of tolylenediisocyanate.
CONSTITUTION: The nitration of toluene is conducted using a mixed acid consisting of 10W30wt% of nitric acid, 60W90wt% of sulfuric acid and 10W30wt% of water in such an amount that the molar ratio of the nitric acid to the toluene is 2W5 in an inert solvent as chloroform or ethylenedichloride at -30W40°C for 1W10 hr to give a dinitrotoluene product rich in 2,4- and2,6-isomers. In the reaction, the reaction mixure is stood to divide into the aqeuous layer and the solvent layer including dinitrotoluene and the solvent layer is washed with water and distilled to give the DNT.
