Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A benzoic acid derivative of formula I: (R is ≥6C long-chain alkyl group; X and Y are H or ≤4C lower alkoxy group, at least one of them is alkoxy group).
EXAMPLE: 4-n-Octadecyloxy-3,5-dimethoxy-benzoic acid.
USE: Compounds showing only a metastable state without the liquid erystal state perse, however showing it in the form of a silver salt derivative having photosensitivity, improved heat stability and handleability, and usable only at a given temperature as a photosensitive meterial supported on synthetic resins.
PROCESS: An aldehyde, e.g. vanillin or syringaaldehyde, having a lower slkoxy group, is reacted with an alkyl halide of the formula R-Z (Z is halogen) in the presence of an alkali to give a compound of formula II, which is then oxidized to form the objective compound of formula I.
