PURPOSE:To prevent decrease in quantity of heat of recovered unburned gas, by installing a seal mechanism mad up of an annular supporting member and a screen made of a cylindrical, heat resistant sheet between the throat of a converter and the skirt member of a hood set above the throat of a converter in order to prevent air from entering into the hood. CONSTITUTION:At the lower end of the skirt member 4 of a hood set above the throat of a converter is installed an annular supporting member 6. A screen 7 made of cylindrical, heat resistant sheet is hung from the supporting member 6 in the direction of the upper end of the throat 2 of the converter. The supporting member 6 and the screen 7 constitute a seal mechanism. The screen 7 is made into a long and narrow bag with an inside screen 7A and an outside screen 7B, and an expansible metal plate 8 such as a bellows etc. is attached in the screen 7. The heat resistant screen 7 shuts the space between the lower end of the skirt member 4 and the upper end 2 of the converter, preventing air from entering into the hood. CO contained in the converter gas does not burn needlessly, so that the converter gas of high heat value is recovered.
