Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the productivity of manufacture of luminescent tubes for metal halide lamps by fhishing the extraction of a gas of a eutectic mixture of a complex compound in a single process in the manufacture of luminescent tubes for metal halide lamps.
CONSTITUTION: A luminescent tube 1 is connected to a vacuum system through an exhaust pipe 6 to make a high vacuum. The tube 1 is heated to expell the gas remaining in the tube 1, then cooled to room temperature one. A complex compound 9 composed of natrium iodide and scandium iodide in a molecular ration of approximately 2 to 1 and metallic scandium 4 are put in the tube 1. Thereafter, the tube 1 is put in an electric furnace 5 where it is heated for three minutes to perform gas extraction refining of the complex compound 9. During the heating in the electric furnace 5, the exhaust pipe 6 is cooled at a cooling section 7 by the air from a cooling air pipe 8. After the gas extraction refining, a fixed amount of mercury and a fixed amount of a halide gas, such as Ar, are introduced into the tube 1 and the tube 1 is sealed and cut at a part above the cooling section 7 thus completing a luminescent tube 1.
