USE: Synthetic intermediate of naturally occurring drimane-type sesquiterpene, such as warburganal [A] and polygodial [B] having antifeedant activity against African army worm.
PREPARATION: 11,14-Diacetoxy-furan derivative of formula 12 is stood together with an oxidant as OsO4 in a solvent of ether-pyridine to form the objective dihydroxy derivative of formula 13. The reaction is effected at 0W30°C, preferably room temperature, for 1W60 days. The compound 12 is derived from β-ionone through many steps.
