Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, an intermediate for the synthesis of amino acids, e.g. L-tryptophan or L-proline, very readily and industrially advantageovsly, by oxidizing N-acetylornithine with an inexpensive oxidizing agent of a persulfate, using a purely chemical method.
CONSTITUTION: Optically active Nα-acetylornithine (A) of formula I is oxidized with a persulfate by a purely chemical method to give optically active N-acetyl glutamic acid-γ-semialdehyde of formula II very readily in high yield. For example, an aqueous solution of A in soduim (potassium) hydroxide, or sodium carbonate, is incorporated with silver ions, e.g. silver nitrate or acetate. The solution is then oxidized with the persulfate in the form of a solution or crystals at 0°CWroom temperature, preferably 0W10°C, to give the compound of formula II in an 80W 85% yield.
