Abstract

PURPOSE:To separate and recover an aromatic aldehyde from a mixture containing the same, in high yield, at a low temperature, without loss of a bisulfite, etc., by using a sulfite together with a bisulfite, thereby accelerating the decomposition of an aldehyde adduct and the extraction of isolated aldehyde. CONSTITUTION:A mixture containing an aromatic aldehyde is mixed with an aqueous solution containing a bisulfite (pref. alkali metal bisulfite, esp. Na and/or K bisulfite), to form an aldehyde adduct. The aqueous solution containing said adduct is brought into contact with an oil-soluble and water-insoluble solvent having higher bioling point than the separated aldehyde, in the presence of an aqueous solution containing a bisulfite and a sulfite (alkali metal salt, esp. Na and/or K salts), and the aldehyde adduct is decomposed into aldehyde and the bisulfite. The isolated aldehyde is extracted with an oil-soluble solvent at >=30 deg.C. The aqueous layer is pref. recycled and reused.
