Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the wavelength plates having arbitrarly desired phase differences to be readily obtained voluminously by so superposing plural sheets of high polymer films having double refractions that mutual optical axes have required angles.
CONSTITUTION: The phase difference γ of a sheet-form high polymer film is measured and two sheets of films 11 and 12 are cut out from this high polymer film. Next, the angle C that both optical axes of the films 11 and 12 assume and which is necessary for obtaining the wavelength plate of a desired phase difference through superposition of the films 11 and 12 is obtained by using the phase difference γ. Two sheets of the films 11 and 12 are so superposed as to have the required angle C and are sandwiched between two sheets of protecting plates 13 and 14, thence they are integrated by means of adhesives. If the γ of the sheets used in this way is once measured and the angle C of both films 11 and 12 is once set, then the wavelength plates 10 of the same characteristics, e.g., quarter-wave plate or half-wave plate may be voluminously produced.
