Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an adsorbent excellent in the performance of removing gas containing sulfur by heat treatment of an active carbon fiber having a specified nitrogen content and a specific surface area made of acrylonitril fiber after a specified metal compound is attached thereto.
CONSTITUTION: One or more kinds of compounds of Zn, Fe, Cu and Ni are attached to an active carbon fiber having a nitrogen content of 4 to 10% and a specific surface area of 400 to 800 m2/g made of an acrylonitril fiber. Then, the fiber undergoes a heat treatment in an inert gas above 800°C thereby a fibrous adsorbent containing 1 to 10% by weight of the afore-mentioned metal. For example, after oxidation at 200 to 300°C, an acrylonitril resin is treated by an activated medium such as carbon dioxide at 700 to 1,000°C. Then, after attachement of one or more kinds of inorganic or organic salt of Zn, Fe, Cu and Ni by impregnant, it is subjected to a heat treatment in the stream of nitrogen above 800°C for 5 to 10 minutes. Thus, an adsorbent for removal of poisonous gas containing sulfur can be obtained.
