Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a tertiary amine by reacting a secondary amine with a carbonyl compound under specific reducing conditions provided by contacting CO and water with a cobalt carbonyl complex catalyst coordinated by a chelate compound having two or more phosphino groups, at high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A tertiary amine is prepared in high yield, by reacting a secondary amine with an aldehyde and a ketone under the particular reducing conditions. The reducing conditions are provided by contacting CO and water with a cobalt carbonyl omplex catalyst coordinated by a chelate compound I or II (R1WR5 are alkyl, benzyl, hydrocarbiloxy, etc.; n is 0W6; l and m are 1W6) having two or more phosphino groups in the molecule, to generate nascent hydrogen. The reaction is carried out in a solvent, e.g. alcohols, etc., at 100W160°C.
EFFECT: CO is used as a part of the reducing agent and therefore the blast furnace gas or the water gas of the iron industry can be utilized.
