Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform narrow gap welding without causing welding defects such as fusion failure, slag inclusion, etc., by detecting the momentary value of welding currents at the rocking end and the central part of the arc, and adjusting the rocking amplitude of the welding arc, based upon the foregoing.
CONSTITUTION: It is detected that the rocking amplitude is proper or improper, by the difference of the momentary value of the welding currents at the rocking end and the central part of the arc 6. In this case, when the welding torch 12 is located on the center line of the groove 2, the current iR at the right rocking end and the current iL at the left end are amlost equal, it is good only by comparing either current at both the ends with the current iC at the rocking center. And when it is detected that the rocking amplitude is improper, the rocking amplitude is modified to the proper value by making the projecting length of the welding wire 8 constant, and changing the rocking angle. As a result of the foregoing, even if the mounting precision of the welded substance 1, namely, the groove width is varied, the narrow gap welding can be carried out no inconvenience.
