Abstract

PURPOSE: To considerably increase the electrostatic capacity between a detecting element and a photoreceptor and achieve higher effective sensitivity by forming minute undulations on the surface of the detecting electrode thereby increasing its surface in the surface potential detection of the photoreceptor of a copying machine or the like.
CONSTITUTION: The potentials outputted from a detector 11 in correspondence to the surface potentials by latent images of a photoreceptor 12 are stored in a capacitor 15 via image timing switch 14 after amplification. The switch 14 is closed only at the timing when the leading end part of the electrostatic latent images passes a detector 11, whereby the background potential of said leading end part is stored. This background potential is converted to a bias potential by an arithmetic circuit 16 and is applied to the developing electrode of a magnet brush developing device 17. A guard electrode is provided around the detecting electrode in the detector 11 and the surface of the detecting electrode is physically and chemically processed to be formed with numerous minute undulations on its surface, whereby its surface area is considerably increased.
