Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain high purity and high concentration of caustic soda with operation of a high current coefficient by using a fluorocarbon polymer cation exchange membrane with carboxylic acid group of a specific exchange capacity, which is used for the electrolysis of sodium chloride. CONSTITUTION:As the cation exchange membrane for the electrolysis of sodium chloride in the manufacture of caustic soda, a fluorocarbon polymer cation exchange membrane with carboxylic acid group of a 0.5-4 milli-equivalent/g of dry resin exchange capacity, which is a Na-type resin with a 5-50% moisture content, is used. When using the cation exchange membrane as the diaphragm of sodium chloride electrolysis, the back diffusion of OH ion from cathode compartment to anode compartment can be prevented, thus assuring the manufacture of a high purity and high concentration of caustic soda in the cathode compartment and also of a high purity chlorine free of oxygen in the anode compartment by operation of a high current coefficient and density.
