Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a highly hydrophilic, water-absorbing polyurethane foam in good reproducibility, by incorporating a specially-treated water-absorbing resin insoluble to water in the manufacturing process of the foam.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacturing process of a polyurethane foam, a water- absorbing resin insoluble to water whose surface is partly or fully coated with a substance soluble to a solvent incapable of dissolving the polyurethane foam is incorporated in the reaction system. Said water-absorbing resin can be prepared by the polymerization between (A) starch and/or celluose, (B) a polymerizable monomer which is water-soluble or becomes water-soluble by hydrolysis [e.g., (meth) acrylic acid or its ester], and (C) a crosslinking agent [e.g., a (polyoxy) alkylene glycol di- (meth) acrylate] followed by, if required, carrying out a further hydrolysis. The polyurethane foam obtained is preferably treated with a solvent to extract and remove substances soluble to the solvent.
