Abstract
PURPOSE: To attain excellent forging of a pipe of desired length with good production efficiency by positioning one terminal of a steel ingot bloom at a step part fitted to a mandrel and then forging the steel ingot bloom at the free-terminal side of the mandrel.
CONSTITUTION: For forging, mandrel 3 is nipped by manipulator tong 4 and inserted into a steel ingot bloom. One terminal is positioned in contact with the flank of step part 3' and manipulator tong 4 is turned while anvils 1 and 2 are moved upward and downward, thereby smashing the steel ingot bloom for forging. At this time, since the steel ingot bloom is restricted by step part 3', it expands ineviatably toward the free-terminal side of mandrel 3 and is pushed out of madrel 3 in consequence. After the whole circumference at a needed place of the steel ingot bloom is forged, manipulator tang 4 is advanced and the forging of the whole circumference at another needed position of the steel ingot bloom is continued in the same way. In this method, a long pipe is forged without reference to the length of mandrel 3.
