Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively demagnetize the residual magnetism in a steel material by passing the steel material being magnetically saturated by direct currents at eddy- current flaw detecting procedure and the like through the three-staged coils which generate DC, AC, and DC or AC magnetic fields respectively at a low electric power level. CONSTITUTION:A steel material 3 is magnetically saturated by direct currents in eddy-current defect-detecting or magnetic defect-detecting operations, and the magnetic flux 1 is remained in the inside of the steel material 3. When the steel material 3 passes through a coil A, the magnetic flux 1 is demagnetized to the extent it is not inverted by the de-variable magnetic field of the coil. When the steel material 3 passes through the ac magnetic field of a coil B, the still-remained remanence is stably reduced to the vicinity of zero. Then, when the steel material 3 passes through a coil C, the magnetism remained in the steel material 3 caused by geomagnetism or external magnetism is completely dissapeared by the dc or ac magnetic field. In this constitution the remanence remained in the steel material 3 after the defect detection is effectively demagnetized at a low electric power level.
