Abstract

PURPOSE: To prolong the life of an elastic roller and enable fixing ability to be maintained well for a long time by providing a changeover means for changing over a pressing roller and a heating roller to a contact state and a pressure contact state.
CONSTITUTION: An elastic roller 4 is rotating in a contact state with a rigid heating roller 3 and a rigid pressing roller 5 until copying paper P enters the fixing device but when the leading end of the copying paper P is detected by detecting elements 20, 21, a clutch 35 actuates and a cam 34 turns counterclockwise to force up one end of the operating arm 41 of a toggle mechanism, thus causing a bearing 49 to be forced downward by a piston 47 and spring 48. As a result, the roller 6 is forced downward, by which the elastic roller 4 and heating roller 3 are changed over to a pressure contact state and the pressure necessary for hot melt fixing is thus given to the copying paper P.
