Abstract

PURPOSE: In the production of melamine resin by adding formaldehyde in portions to melamine, the amounts of formaldehyde added in each portion is made less than that of the preceding one and the reaction is effected at a temperature lower than the refluxing one, thus forming the tansparent liquid resin free from discoloration.
CONSTITUTION: Melamine resin is produced by adding formaldehyde (F) in portions to melamine (M) in an aqueous medium at a molar ratio of less than preferably 2, e.g., 1.9W1.1F/M and effecting the multi-stage reaction. The amount of formaldehyde is 70W10, preferably 50W20% of that of the preceding step. The reaction temperature is below the refluxing one in the reaction system, e.g., 90W 98°C and the pH is preferably 6.4W8.0.
