Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce scanning light with the simple constitution by acousto-optically operating an optical guide. CONSTITUTION:A dielectric optical guide 13 of a refractive index higher than that of a substrate 5 is formed through diffusion or the like on the substrate such as of LiNbO3 or the like and a comb-type electrode 10 is provided through vapor deposition or the like. When pulse-form voltage is applied to this electrode 10, ultrasonic wave pulses are generated and propagate in a waveguide 13, and the refractive index fluctuating portions 11 formed in the waveguide 13 by the acousto-optic effect of the dielectric propagate and move along the waveguide 13. Hence, the light entering through a prism 12 and propagating in the waveguide 13 emits from the moving fluctuating portions 11, thus photo scanning may be performed with the simple constitution.
