Abstract
PURPOSE:To protect monolithic catalyst carrier from damages, by applying a force to a cylindrical cushion and annular cushions by independent retainer members to compress them inwards from opposite sides thereof and thereby keeping the cylindrical cushion at correct position in its compressed condition. CONSTITUTION:Exhaust gas purifying apparatus 2 connected in exhaust pipe 1 comprises a monolithic catalyst carrier 4 supported in cylindrical casing 3 by use of cylindrical cushion 5 fitted around carrier 4 and annular cushions 6, 6 disposed at the front and at the back of carrier 4. These cushions 5, 6 are compressed inwards by means of independent retainer members 7, 8. The retainer member 7 is shaped in a cylindrical form and fitted on the inside of cylindrical casing 3, whereas retainer member 8 is formed with outer short cylindrical portion 8a fitted on the inside of retainer member 7 and small-diameter portion 8b on the inside of portion 8a. With such an arrangement, annular cushion 6 is placed in annular recess 9 formed by the small-diameter portion 8b and retainer member 7.
